GENERAL
DESCRIPTION & APPLICATIONS
|
Norbornane is a saturated bicyclic hydrocarbon with chemical formula C7H12( a
crystalline compound with melting point 88 C). The molecule consists of a
cyclohexane ring bridged with a methylene group in the1,4- position. Norbornene
(norbornylene or norcamphene) is comprised of a cyclohexene ring (carries a
double bond). Norbornadiene carries two double bonds. Double bond induces
significant ring strain and high reactivity.
IUPAC names Norbornane :
Bicyclo[2.2.1]heptane Norbornene : Bicyclo[2.2.1]-2-heptene
Norbornadiene: Bicyclo[2.2.1]hepta-2,5-diene
Norbornene and its
derivatives are made by a Diels-Alder reaction of cyclopentadiene and alkenes.
They are monomers for ring-opening polymerizations and vinyl-addition
polymerizations. to prepare polymers of high glass transition temperatures and
high optical clarity. Norbornene turns into a cyclic olefin copolymer when
combined with ethylene. 5-Ethylidene-2-norbornene, derived from cyclopentadiene and
butadiene, has two double bonds for subsequent reaction. and used predominantly
as a diene monomer in the manufacture of EPDM rubber (Ethylene-Propylene-Diene-Monomer). Norbornene derivatives are also used to make intermediates for
pharmaceuticals , pesticides, fragrances and in general organic synthesis.
Norbornadiene is a starting material for the synthesis of
polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons including amantanes and it is used as a catalytic transfer agent.
